Sorry, realized with different extension on output file VLC was playing, while Window Media Player (W7) was playing original . Does WMP kick up contrast to "punch up" the appearance?

Hi, I am using the latest (april 2) release and converting a large number of .mov and .avi files all taken from a few different cameras (not video cameras). Resolution ranges from 840x ? to 720p and 1080p. The quality of the videos is great even at 1500kbps, which reduces file size ~90%. However the output is all gray and washed out - all the colors look muddier and the blacks are more like charcoal.

I'm using pretty much stock settings for H.264, strict, no filters, no profiles, etc, just input average data rate.

I tried going up to 2500kbps but if anything it looked worse.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated,
