I wonder what AC3 encoder VidCoder/Handbrake is using? Aften?

Not sure. They don't have the name in the codec ID or label. You might get a response from the HandBrake IRC channel.

To whom it may concern, I got this answer from the Handbrake forums:
"HandBrake uses libav for ac3 encoding. It has many (most? perhaps even all and more?) of the improvements made to aften after it was originally forked from ffmpeg. Justin Ruggles (the author of aften) is heavily involved in the development of libav." (JohnAStebbins)

To be honest, VidCoder 1.4.24 clearly says "AC3 (Libav)", so no doubt here.
But the latest beta only says "AC3", so I wasn't sure if there had been changes recently...
