Most of my encodes are ending with "Failed" but they still work...

Mar 18, 2014 at 9:39 PM
I am new to VidCoder and have started to encode some of my DVDs to put on a NAS drive.

I am running 1.4.25 x64 and am using the High Profile and then using Target Size or CQ to get the size I need.

But many of my encodes end up as "Failed" even though the process got to the end and the resulting file is complete and appears to work fine.

Looking at the logs (I can provide the whole thing if needed), the only sign of an error is:

[20:30:09] hb_scan: path=\HP_NAS\video\Movies\DVDs To Convert\Uncle Buck\VIDEO_TS, title_index=0

NAME OPEN FAILED
libdvdnav: Unable to find home directorylibdvdnav: DVD disk reports itself with Region mask 0x00f50000. Regions: 2 4

But at the end it shows:

[20:38:25] libhb: work result = 0

Encode failed. Error(s) were reported during the encode.

Job completed

I have read about "False Positive" failures but that was in older versions and I wonder if this is the same.. Should I just ignore this and move on.. Or has something actually "failed"?

The beta has a little bit better handling of this kind of error. Generally if the problem was "Error(s) were reported" and it looks like everything is fine, that means you're OK.

Many thanks.. Am I right in thinking that the x64 version of the Beta still isn't working for 2 Pass MP4?

Correct.

Scratch that, just fixed the 2-pass x64 crash in 1.5.18 Beta.
Mar 29, 2014 at 4:20 PM
I am still struggling with this.. Even with the Beta, I now don't get "Failed" but "Errors Reported".. Problem is, if I do the exact same encode again, I can get it to "Succeed"..

I would understand if a given file Failed or Reported Errors every time.. But how can it work one time and not the next.

I think its basically down to whether the computer is idle.. If I leave it running overnight then generally 95% of encodes Succeed.. But if I do it during the day, when I am doing other things, I get "Errors Reported".. I am pretty sure that this is nothing to worry about, but I would rather have "Success" than "Errors Report" if at all possible.. So right now, I am simply kicking them of again each time it fails.

Any suggestions/theories as to why this is happening?

I display that warning when I find an error in the encode log. Sometimes they're nothing to worry about but sometimes they can be real issues. Can you post both an "Errors Reported" and a "Succeeded" log? And let me know if you found any problems with the "Errors Reported"; I might need to suppress that specific error.
Mar 30, 2014 at 10:48 AM
Cheers.. I am waiting to find a pair of logs of the SAME file.. One with "errors" and one which ended in success.. Interestingly, overnight, I did 8 encodes and they all ended in Success.. Then, this morning, the first one AFTER I started to use the PC ended with errors, so its something to do with the computer not being at idle...

Just to give you something to look at, here is a log from an encode with errors.. Interestingly, right in the middle of this log, it talks about another movie.. I think I probably added the 2nd movie to the queue whilst this one was encoding.. Could this cause "errors"?

*** I tried to paste the log and its too big.. How can I send it to you??? ***

Here it is before it gets trunkated

OK.. here is an example.. I was encoding "Lost In Space" and this attempt ended with "Errors Reported":

http://pastebin.com/R9a8wALL

However, I repeated it again, and this time it ended in success:

http://pastebin.com/b5svHs7P

I have a theory.. In the cases where I have seen "Errors", there is reference to another movie in the log.. This is because I add another movie to the queue whilst the one in question is encoding.

In the case above, I was encoding "Lost In Space", but you will see at 10:28, I added "Insomnia" to the queue:

I wonder if this causes an error?
Apr 1, 2014 at 10:55 PM
There certainly seems to be something to this.. I have now encoded 30+ movies, and all succeeded first time.. My method is
  1. Load VidCoder
  2. Add all of the movies I want to encode to the queue
  3. Start the encode
  4. Go to bed.
As long as I am not using the computer, the encodes do not report errors.. I am still not sure whether its the process of adding a movie to the queue, when one is already encoding, or whether its general use of the PC.. Either way, as long as you leave it alone, you get 100% "Success"

Did you determine if the "errors reported" files had playback problems or not?
Apr 1, 2014 at 11:44 PM
They appear too play fine.. But i dont have time to watch the entire movie(s) all the way through to check..

Since my objective is to convert my entire DVD collection, i am only doing this once, so rather than take chances, when i get errors, i delete the file and do it again until i get "success". Perhaps a little OTT and/or paranoid, but if i do come to watch the movie in the future and its not perfect, i wont be in a position to re-encode it again....

In truth, i don believe this is a big deal.. I am almpst certainly being paranoid... But it would give me piece of mind if i knew what or why the error occured?

I'm just collecting a bit more data on the issue. Deciding whether or not to surface these errors in the UI. It used to be important because HandBrake would fail, log some errors then report success. But they've changed it so they are reporting failures more reliably so I may just ignore any errors and show them as successful encodes. Because it seems that you often can get errors reported but still have perfectly good files.

Okay I've removed the warnings in 1.5.19 Beta.
