why connect to internet?

Sep 29, 2014 at 10:42 PM
Why does VidCoder try connect to on install?

Even if updates are disabled it tries to connect.

Is there any phoning home or spyware?

posted this in wrong forum, sorry. have deleted it

I didn't write any call to that URL. The only internet calls I'm aware of is to check for updates and download the updates. Is this happening before or after VidCoder launches for the first time? The installer package (Inno Setup) might be trying to find out what country you are in, possibly to pick which language to display to the user. Though that's just a guess, I didn't find anything talking about Inno Setup making that kind of call.

when launched first and the firewall gives that ip. Even when denied it continues trying to connect. is there any spyware in inno setup?

Inno Setup closes at the end of setup (when VidCoder launches). Is the Inno Setup exe still running when you see the accesses? Does the tool you're using tell you which program made the call?

Though I'm pretty sure Inno Setup doesn't have any spyware in it and the call looks fairly innocent.

comodo firewall says vidcoder.exe made the call

Then it's not Inno Setup. It's either in a library I'm using, the HandBrake core or an instrumentation error. I can't think of a reason any of the components I'm using would make that call, or why the HandBrake library would either.

I'm running Fiddler and I see the call to latest-beta2.xml after install but no call to Are you sure your tool is accurate?

that is the ip it gives no reason to think its wrong

Except that another tool disagrees with it. I just want to make sure I'm not going on a wild goose chase.

not sure what yuou mean by wild goose chase. I have comodo firewall, your tool is fiddler? I do not have that or know about it.
the call is not to an ip tracker it is to the ip which goes to Is that you?

Ahh yes, That's my webhosting. You're seeing an access to that IP to get this file: . No spyware is involved.

I thought you said it was accessing !

ok still i think it would be best to not have it try to connect unless the computer owner wants it to. it should pop up do you want to check for update. Even when updates are disabled it tries to connect scrOll down it shows where it refers to

It's standard to have software check for updates by default. Most people don't mind automatic updates and would be annoyed by a pop-up. This won't be changing.

i disagree. my computer and i dont want to be annoyed with persistent checks. so will get different prog
Sep 30, 2014 at 6:01 PM
Do you still see the checks when you disable updates? If so that's a bug and I can fix that.
Sep 30, 2014 at 11:18 PM
yes i had to block it with the firewall. That is why i was wary

Are you running Beta or Stable?

I can't reproduce that behavior on Beta. If you have "Automatic updates" disabled in Options -> Updates, then the program makes no web calls on startup. I checked the code as well, we do bail out before starting the update check if you've got updates disabled.
