Overview

VidCoder is a DVD/Blu-ray ripping and video transcoding application for Windows. It uses HandBrake as its encoding engine.

Calling directly into the HandBrake library gives it a more rich UI than the official HandBrake Windows GUI.

Prerequisites

You'll need .NET 4 (only the client profile is needed). If you don't have it, VidCoder will prompt you to download and install it. If you're on Windows 8 you shouldn't need to install anything; it has .NET 4 pre-installed.

You do not need to install HandBrake for VidCoder to work.

DVDs
VidCoder can rip DVDs but does not defeat the CSS encryption found in most commercial DVDs. You've got several options to remove the encryption:

AnyDVD ($89, removes encryption on the fly)
Passkey for DVD ($40, removes encryption on the fly)
DVDFab 9 (Free, requires copying to the hard drive before encoding)
MakeMKV (Free, requires copying to the hard drive before encoding)
DVD Decrypter (Free, requires copying to the hard drive before encoding, no longer updated)

Blu-rays
There is Blu-ray ripping, but subtitles are not supported yet. Also, again, VidCoder does not defeat AACS or BD+ Blu-ray encryption. There are a few options for removing it:

AnyDVD HD ($152, removes encryption on the fly)
Passkey for Blu-ray ($60, removes encryption on the fly)
DVDFab 9 (Free, requires copying to the hard drive before encoding)
MakeMKV (Currently free in time-limited beta, requires copying to the hard drive before encoding)

Reporting Bugs

If you encounter any bugs with encoding, please see if they happen with the official HandBrake client as well. If the problem is reproducible on HandBrake, submit the issue to them. If it's only VidCoder that has the problem, submit it here.

Translating VidCoder

Want VidCoder in your language? Let me know if you're interested via email ( david.rickard@gmail.com ) or by starting a discussion. You'll be expected to do the initial localization and translate additional strings as I make changes and add features. Please don't sign up if you can't commit to that; I don't want to have to drop a language because the translator stopped responding.

How to do it

The process is fairly straightforward. You just need to translate some snippets of text.

First, you'll need a tool for editing the .resx files that VidCoder uses. ResEx is a good editor to use.

Next download and extract the resource files to your computer. Go to the Source Control section, select the "beta" branch, and click "Download". The .resx files you are interested in are in VidCoder\Resources .

Open the ResEx tool, then click Open and select one of the VidCoder .resx files. Make sure to choose the "base" file (ex: EncodingRes.resx, not EncodingRes.hu.resx).

Now add the language you want to translate VidCoder to:

You'll be given a list of languages to pick from. If you have a choice, pick the language only. That means if you have a choice between "German" and "German (Germany)" pick "German". This way users from other locales will be able to use this translation. You only need to specify the locale if you are adding a locale translation on top of an already existing language translation.

After you pick the culture, you can start doing the translation. Some string may have placeholders like {0} or {1} in them. These are usually some information that should show up in the message such as the location of a file or the name of a preset. What they are should be clear from the use in the English string.

You don't need to make translations for everything. Anything you leave blank will display the English string. That might be the case if there is a technical term where there is no translation to your language.

When you're done, click "Save" and this should create a new .resx file for the culture you picked. When finished with all of the .resx files you can email them to me ( david.rickard@gmail.com ). I'll compile them and get a build of VidCoder out to you with the translation so you can see how it looks. Blu-rays
VidCoder does not defeat AACS or BD+ Blu-ray encryption. There are a few options for removing it:

AnyDVD HD ($152, removes encryption on the fly)
Passkey for Blu-ray ($60, removes encryption on the fly)
MakeMKV (Currently free in time-limited beta, requires copying to the hard drive before encoding)
DVDFab Blu-ray Copy ($60, requires copying to the hard drive before encoding)

Subtitles on Blu-ray only work in the Beta release.

Platform

VidCoder is built on .NET 4 Client Profile/WPF in C#.

It runs on any OS that supports .NET 4: Windows 7, 8, Vista, XP, Server 2003 and Server 2008.

Translating VidCoder

How to do it

The process is fairly straightforward. You just need to translate some snippets of text.

First, you'll need a tool for editing the .resx files that VidCoder uses. ResEx is a good editor to use.

Next download and extract the VidCoder .resx files to your computer.

Open the ResEx tool, then click Open and select one of the VidCoder .resx files. Now add the language you want to translate VidCoder to:

You'll be given a list of languages to pick from. If you have a choice, pick the language only. That means if you have a choice between "German" and "German (Germany)" pick "German". This way users from other locales will be able to use this translation. You only need to specify the locale if you are adding a locale translation on top of an already existing language translation.

After you pick the culture, you can start doing the translation. Some string may have placeholders like {0} or {1} in them. These are usually some information that should show up in the message such as the location of a file or the name of a preset. What they are should be clear from the use in the English string.

You don't need to make translations for everything. Anything you leave blank will display the English string. That might be the case if there is a technical term where there is no translation to your language.

When you're done, click "Save" and this should create a new .resx file for the culture you picked. When finished with all of the .resx files you can email them to me ( david.rickard@gmail.com ). I'll compile them and get a build of VidCoder out to you with the translation so you can see how it looks. (Or if you are so inclined you can download the source, add your translated .resx files and build it yourself)
