Zune Player Playback

description

Thanks for the help ahead of time. I looked over other issues but did not see anyone pertaining to the Zune Player. I am using the Zune player to stream to my Xbox's for the family. And I have been encoding almost for two months using two machines, identical Dell Laptops with I5 processors running the most recent X64 builds, I've updated as they rolled out. But throughout the encoding I would play and test using VLC 2.0.0 / 2.0.1. All seemed fine until I attached my 1tb drive to my main machine used to stream the data. I opened Zune to acquire new media and it did but it was incomplete. I even used a tool provided by Microsoft to "reset" your library as there is not an option within the program itself. It ran its media acquisition and still came up short on a number of titles. I then checked the drive and it was there and working. So I did a small test on the two machines and encoded two videos of 30 seconds on each machine and forced Zune to play both files. Sample 000 played fine, Sample 001 and 002 did not work. It returned with an error saying Zune could not support this codec ... I tried to see the codec information in VLC and it gave general information. So I used another application called MediaInfo and exported the findings. In addition I compared the encoding settings and they were exported and imported after it was verified and to ensure they were encoding with the same quality. Both boxes are using the same profile with high settings to reproduce the best quality I can. I can provide a copy of the profile as well as the video samples both are around 5mb each. Are you talking about the Zune software, as in you were trying to play it on your PC?

Kaiswil2 wrote Apr 22, 2012 at 8:27 PM

Yes. Ironically the reason I am using it over say Windows Media Library sharing is that WMP does not support Mp4 and other Xvid files but Zune does. On the flip side Zune supports some file that WMP does not so I currently have both sharing until everything gets converted to Mp4.

Player compatibility is usually something that's up to the HandBrake library I use: http://vidcoder.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=Submitting%20bug%20reports

Boy, do I look like a fool. I just perused the HB forum and they do not support non HB true users and I rechecked my stuff again at work and went over where the fault coming from. I installed Zune on my PC at work (I'm an admin, so no problems.) Then I took my External HD's from this weekends batch of encoding and plugged in both Station 1 and Station 2 and noticed it only found 141 titles. Well between the two it should have hit over 300 with several TV shows I had running. Well I started to see a trend appear and looked very close to what titles where actually being found. I noticed only NON 5.1 Audio Videos appeared. Things like old movies or TV series extra materials were only available in 2.0. So I did some checking and Zune Software does not support 5.1 audio material if it was not purchased from their store but even that is a misnomer as there store is slightly different on each device (Xbox, PC, Zune HD Player etc.). So I looked again at the Windows Media Player option and natively WMP10/11 does not support MP4 but WMP12 does and it supported my files because I encoded both AAC (mp4a) and AC3 (a52) for compatibility. So thanks for your help and I hope others can use this information. Looks like I'll be building a new Win7 box shortly.
